There are days when I ask myself what kind of society we live in. First, two of my colleagues were victims of the theft of their laptop computers in their cars. Of course, they shouldn't have left such a valuable object lying around on the car seat, but they will know better next time.

However, we suspect that thieves observe people getting out of their offices during lunch hour, and follow them. The thieves suppose that these people will stop into nearby restaurants. Those coming out of our building are in a hurry and have computer bags hanging off their shoulders. Auto123.com's offices being located in a high-technology area (seriously) a few blocks away from a commercial zone, thieves, shopping centres and restaurants abound. That's a quick recipe for getting our car vandalized and possessions stolen. The last car that got mutilated was a poor Hyundai Azera we recently tested.

I imagine that it wouldn't be hard for the police force to lay a trap for the thieves, to pass as normal businessmen and be the bait to catch them. But no, the police prefer sitting on the side of the nearby highway service road, radar in hand, and catch people driving 15 km/h too fast. It's even worse when I see a team of cops using their radar and flagging down speeders to immobilize their vehicle on the side of the street. They can catch four or five at a time, making big bucks fast. However, all these vehicles stopping don't have enough room to park, and partly block access to the service road leading to the highway. They're now in an unsafe and dangerous position, but the police don't mind, because they're too busy writing up all these speeding tickets.

So, the criminals are running freely in the streets of the city, while innocent people like and me are under tight scrutiny. But why would the police run after these thieves? Your car has been broken into, but it's doesn't matter because you're insured. And, even if the police succeeded in catching the thieves, did you know that it costs taxpayers about $50,000 a year to keep each criminal behind bars? In the end, it's always you and me that end up paying for all this.

So be careful when you park your car. Don't leave anything valuable lying around inside. And watch out for the police, they got a big budget for buying radar guns...
