The Draw: The first hybrid car to hit the mainstream market, the Insight brought Honda’s reputation for reliability and sensibility onto the scene with a uniquely styled, high-efficiency new model. Propulsion comes by way of a 1.oL, 3-cylinder engine mated to Honda’s original Integrated Motor Assist (IMA) system. IMA blended electric and mechanical power as it saw fit, and further fuel savings came from a lightweight and aerodynamic body. This is a compact, easily maneuverable little car --even if it won’t be smashing any Mustangs in a light-to-light race.

The Common Issues: The Insight looks pleasantly clear of issues with its actual hybrid hardware. Most owner-stated complaints centre around interference picked up by the audio system, broken hood releases, poor air conditioner performance, and a “check engine” light caused by a failed solenoid. Cold-start issues may be fixed by reprogramming the ECU, which is easy and relatively inexpensive. Ensure the idle-stop system works properly, as a broken clutch-switch may cause problems here -- another cheap and easy fix. Look for a “key” light in the instrument cluster while driving. If it’s lit up, you’ll need to have your Insight’s keys reprogrammed.
