The Draw: This last-generation Corolla was highly rated in terms of seat comfort, interior refinement, at-hand storage, fuel economy, and generous trunk space. Fuel mileage is highly rated too -- and the Corolla has a well-deserved reputation for being one of the most reliable cars on the road. Several engine options were available, topping out with 158 horsepower in the top-end XRS model. All Corollas are front-wheel drive.
What to Check: Faster-than-expected wear of factory tires and brakes have been reported, as have bad electrical connectors in the braking system, which will typically cause an “ABS” light to illuminate in the instrument cluster. Shoppers are also advised to confirm proper operation of the remote key fobs, and to listen for a squealing sound from under the hood at engine start-up caused by a low-quality drive-belt or improperly tensioned tensioner. Footwell carpeting should be inspected for moisture caused by a leaky sunroof drain tube (if equipped), and the trunk release should be operated several times to confirm proper operation.
