The Draw: When it came to interior dimensions, overall size, value and styling, it looks like this last-generation Focus hit the nail on the head. Taller drivers enjoyed generous headroom, and connected types loved the SYNC communication system, too. Trunk space and fun-factor were also rated highly. Look for both coupe and sedan body styles, and a 140-horsepower engine on all models.
What to Check: Start with a check of the condition of the used Focus’s tires and brakes, calling any abnormal wear into pricing negotiations if present. Listen for unwelcomed suspension noises from the front end, which could appear as clunking, popping or rattling sounds when travelling over bumps. Some owners reported doors that don’t seal properly, which typically result in a “whistling” or “howling” sound at speed. An adjustment to the hinge and latch can fix this issue. Check the Focus for proper alignment by ensuring it rolls straight down the road when the wheel is released briefly. Finally, check all power windows, locks, steering-wheel mounted controls, and the operation of the SYNC system. A five-speed manual transmission will protect shoppers against possible issues with the automatic transmission.
