The Draw: Honda’s knack for building small vehicles with great big storage facilities was highly apparent in the Fit, the first generation of which was available for 2007 and 2008. This much-loved little hatchback got a proven 1.5L engine, manual or automatic gearbox, and earned praise for mileage, versatility, handling, maneuverability, and an all-around easygoing driving experience. Outward visibility is also highly rated, and most owners love the clever rear seat folding system which easily makes room for even larger items.

What to Check: Check the body panels for signs of rust and paint damage, especially on the bumpers. Many owners complain of easily damaged paint on this machine. Check that the hatchback stays open on its own by way of its built-in struts, and that the exterior release for said hatch is in good working order. They’re known to fail, and a new one will run you over $200. “Feel” the Fit’s power steering for any strange sensations, which could indicate a known problem with the power-steering pump.
