Matthias Mueller, president and CEO of Porsche, is thinking of producing vehicles in North America or China in order to reach their annual sales goal of 200,000 units by 2018.

The German plants in Zuffenhausen and Leipzig are reportedly too small to meet these objectives. Mueller admitted that the choice of an assembly location for the Cajun is between a Chinese plant belonging to Volkswagen where the Audi Q5 is built and a location in North America.

Mueller doesn’t believe this decision would be breaking any taboos, as production of the Boxster is currently in the hands of Valmet, a Finn subcontractor. “We are OK as long as we can say our cars are engineered by Porsche”.

Finally, Porsche’s CEO mentioned that the US market is the most important in achieving their goals, where the number of units sold is back to the pre-recession numbers of 2007. On the other side of the Pacific Rim, Porsche will increase its network of dealerships from 35 to 85 or even 100 points of sale.

With the introduction of the Cajun slated for 2013 and the prospect of a “baby roadster” and/or targa version of the Cayman, Mueller is confident that Porsche will be able to achieve its ambitious goals and increase sales to 200,000 units per year.
