Porsche never rests on its laurels, whether on the road or the race track, and 2009 was once again a year of constant activity with the launch of a number of new models and new facilities both in the UK and Germany. The good news is that 2010 is set to be another exciting year for the Stuttgart sports car manufacturer, with further announcements and new model introductions planned.
2009 marked the introduction of the new generation Boxster and Cayman, plus the Cayenne Diesel, and the motor sport-inspired 911 GT3 and 911 GT3 RS. Furthermore, the 911 Turbo marked its 35th anniversary with a new 500bhp engine that underlined its reputation as the definitive high performance sports coupe. These were joined at the end of the year by the lightweight Boxster Spyder and the limited edition 911 Sport Classic. Of course, 2009 also heralded a move into a whole new market segment for Porsche with the launch of the Panamera four-door Gran Turismo in the autumn. This new sports saloon has received a number of prestigious industry awards as the order book continues to grow. In fact, 10,000 examples of the Panamera have left the Porsche factory in Leipzig after just three months, well in line with the company’s expectations to build 20,000 per year across the whole product cycle.
The new Porsche Museum in Stuttgart opened its doors to the public in January 2009 and received high levels of praise for its unique architecture and incredible historic car collection. Offering 5,600 square metres of exhibition space to showcase more than 80 cars, the Museum also incorporates a workshop, a ‘rolling museum’ of over 800 cars, a conference centre and restaurant. To date, the Museum has welcomed an incredible total of half a million visitors.
In the UK, the new Porsche Experience Centre at Silverstone, Northants, has flourished in its first full year of events. More than 12,000 people have visited the bespoke Porsche track facility and participated in the range of driving courses on offer. These include guidance in performance handling and car control, to winter and night driving, as well as race track precision techniques.
