German car manufacturer Porsche is going “green” racing. Last weekend, Porsche raced a 911 GT3 R Hybrid in the grueling 24 Hours of the Nurburgring. The car came very close of winning the race, falling with engine problems with less than 60 minutes to go.
For next year’s race, Porsche intends to race a 918 Spyder Hybrid, derived from the sports car that made sensation at the 2010 Geneva Motor Show.
The car will be powered by a 500-horsepower V-8 engine that revs up to 9200 rpm, and by three electric motors. It features amazingly low fuel consumption with just 3 litres per 100km, and releases only 70g of CO2 per kilometre.
The Porsche 918 Spyder is equipped with an electric four-wheel drive with torque converter, the PDK double-clutch gearbox and an electric boost function.
The 918 Hybrid is expected to cover the distance of 25km in pure electric mode.
