This is the second occasion I've had to test the Quadrasteer™ system from Delphi Automotive Systems and it also involved high-speed highway driving, and I'm more impressed than I was before.
The first time around I got to pilot a big GMC Sierra through a battalion of cones in yet another parking lot, executing everyday maneuvres (parking, doing a three-point turn) that are difficult in a regular pickups and SUVs. With Quadrasteer™, it was like steering a Saturn SC coupe around. It was a paradigm-shifting experience.
This time, with the trailer, the experience was underscored. And on the open road — well, I don't have much real towing experience — but it felt very responsive and easy to drive, and the GMC/Delphi experts swear serious trailerites will find it exciting.
The final test will come sometime soon when GMC lets me along with a Quadrasteer™-equipped Sierra on some off-road course and I try not to hit any trees or big rocks. That should go fairly well, since the things that make it primo in a low-speed parking lot should also apply in a forest. The technology at work in a Sears parking lot should apply in a forest.
