Swedish Brand Targets Premium SUV Segment with New 9-7X

Some say that it's about time Saab arrived at the SUV party, and with the introduction of its 9-7X that time is now. Priced

right on target with Swedish rival Volvo's XC90, the new Saab will receive a base, or Linear MSRP of $50,900. The upscale Arc model will list for $53,400.

The new 9-7X Linear will come equipped with the usual luxury fare, such as leather seating surfaces with heated cushions up front, a top-tier audio system, this one from Bose and featuring a 6CD stacker in the dash, plus adjustable pedals, xenon headlamps, side-curtain airbags, and the choice between a glass sunroof or a roof-mounted DVD entertainment system for rear occupants. Specific to its sport utility application it will come standard with all-wheel drive, 18-inch alloy wheels and integrated roof rails.

Even hardened 9-7X critics, and there seems to be many, will find it difficult to

argue with the integration of GM's award-winning inline six-cylinder as a base powerplant, as it's about as smooth as engines get and extremely potent with 275-horsepower and 275 lb-ft of torque on tap. Moving up to the Arc gives the 9-7X a V8; a reliable if not particularly sophisticated overhead-valve lump with 300-horsepower and 325 lb-ft of torque.

Just the same, the 9-7X looks the part, from the A-pillars forward at least, sporting a Saab snout and badging, and with that Saab Canada is bullish about its sales potential.
