It was at the Italian Grand Prix, which was held at the Autodroma di Monza, that McLaren-Mercedes finished 1-2 for the 3rd time that season. Fernando Alonso, 2-time world champion, won his 4th Grand Prix race of the season, while his teammate, Lewis Hamilton, took 2nd place. Finnish driver Kimi Räikkönen completed the podium. Räikkönen was victim of a serious crash during practice, due to a suspension break, and used the replacement car to qualify for the race.
However, the Mclaren-Mercedes team was eventually stripped of its points on September 13th, 2007, following spying allegations levelled at chief designer Mike Coughlan, who was discovered to be in possession of several Ferrari technical documents. The F1 constructor was excluded from the team championship and fined 100 million dollars. The drivers held on to their respective points.
