We all know how important it is to maintain your car and keep it clean, but the results of study lead by scientists at Queen Mary University in the U.K. will probably make you rethink the frequency and method of your interventions. You see, according to them your steering wheel is host to nine times more germs than a public toilet seat.

If you suffer from Howard Hughes Syndrome (fear of germs), please don’t read the rest.

Their research shows that every square inch of your cabin is crawling with 700 bacteria, compared to the 80 that hang out on toilet seats.

Wait, it gets worse.

With about 10,000 bacteria for each 1 ½ square inch, your trunk earns the unenviable title of filthiest area. They even identified bacillus cereus, a bug that can cause food poisoning.

According to Dr Ron Cutler, director of biomedical science at Queen Mary, “a car is the perfect place for germs to breed, especially if you eat in it or leave uneaten food around”.

A supplementary survey revealed that 42% of drivers often snack behind the wheel, 33% clean their cabin once a year and 10% never even thought of cleaning it.

Kind of makes you want to invest in a hazmat suit, doesn’t it?

That being said, there’s a simple, cheap and incredibly efficient – not to mention scientifically approved – way to avoid driving a germ-infested car: the rigorous and regular cleaning of your cabin.
