Earlier this year, we reported a rumour about Subaru using the WRX STI engine for its new 216a sports car currently being developed with the collaboration of Toyota (whose more publicized variant is called FT-86). Looks like it was a case of misinterpreted information, as Toshio Masuda, senior general manager of product planning at Subaru, suggested the car will receive the STI tuner package.
He said the company is expecting a longer-than-average life cycle for the car and looking at various performance packages, including an STI version, to keep the offering fresh over time.
The STI tuner package typically offers turbocharging, lower-profile tires, more powerful brakes and a sport-tuned suspension. However, a turbo remains doubtful; Subaru officials claim the vehicle's original concept calls for keeping the engine naturally aspirated, in line with the iconic AE-86 which it pays tribute to.
Subaru will officially display the production version at the Tokyo Motor Show in December.
