Subaru's sales have increased by some 7% in the past year in the European marketplace, and Subaru President Hiroyuki Ikeda couldn't be happier.

"We have positioned Europe as a key market for Subaru brand development, and striven to introduce Subaru cars that win the hearts and minds of discerning drivers in Europe." He commented at a press conference last week.

"I believe that the stronger Subaru sales we observe indicate that our efforts have been appreciated."

Ikeda mentioned some of the updates and advancements made to the European market, including a revised suspension for the B9 Tribeca and the SI-Drive system in the Legacy B.Spec model.

Whatever new technologies the carmaker may explore, Ikeda stressed that Subaru will remain loyal to its philosophies and its balance of innovative and refined technology. One such technology is the Symmetrical All Wheel Drive system that the company pioneered to work alongside its horizontally opposed boxer engine for precise handling and high safety standards.

The engine is an award winner, and it's about to get a new sibling. Ikeda announced that the powerplant lineup would be expanded and that the development work on the worlds first boxer diesel engine, the Subaru Boxer Turbo Diesel, is nearly completed.

The boxer configuration is especially fitting for a diesel engine in a number of ways. One of the most significant is that as the pistons counteract each other, vibrations common to diesel engines are cancelled out. The turbocharger is mounted beneath the block, aiding in a low centre of gravity for the car.

Ikeda says he looks forward to unveiling the new engine next year at the Geneva Autoshow.
