During a phone conference detailing his company's quarterly results, Tesla CEO Elon Musk announced that 38,000 people have already ordered a Powerwall home battery, and the delivery of all these units will be completed by mid-2016 at the earliest.

Also, according to InsideEvs.com, Tesla has received 2,500 Powerpack orders from businesses (a single Powerpack includes 10 Powerwalls), meaning an additional 25,000 batteries.

Just to bring you up to speed, the Tesla Powerwall is a lithium-ion battery that charges using electricity generated from solar panels, or when utility rates are low, and powers your home in the evening. It also protects you against power outages by providing a backup electricity supply, Tesla says.

The Tesla Powerwall is automated, compact, and simple to install to the side of your house or garage. Thanks to the solar panels, it offers homeowners independence from the utility grid.
