While this is extremely dangerous and not recommended, a technology called SuperTooth HD promises to make the operation safer.
Its Handsfree Assistant application allows drivers to tweet, update their status or send text messages without taking their hands off the wheel. Since ambient noise often limits the effectiveness of such devices, the company claims its two 5.4-watt speakers and 5.4-watt amplifier result in a system that is three times more powerful than any other speakerphone, while its built-in dual microphones pick up voices more clearly.
The SuperTooth HD is designed to clip onto a car's sun visor. All that's left to do is to pair the device with your mobile phone.
In addition to handling written communication, the technology uses voice commands to answer calls, select pre-dialled numbers, check the battery level and retrieve voice mail.
The Handsfree Assistant feature even reads out loud incoming email and SMS messages as well as updates on Facebook, Twitter and more than 30 other social networking and online tools such as Evernote and Google Calendar.
The SuperTooth HD with Handsfree Assistant will be available in April, retailing for US$129. The special app, which is currently for BlackBerry and Android devices only, can be downloaded and used freely for six months. Once the trial period ends, users will need to subscribe to a pro package at US$5.99 per month or $59.99 annually.
