According to the Japanese newspaper Nikkan Kogyo, the Subaru Tribeca and Mazda6 are about to be jettisoned by their respective automakers, because they aren’t as successful as anticipated.
Built at the Flat Rock, Michigan plant, the Mazda6 is far from achieving the desired goals. When Mazda launched the model in the summer of 2008, it planned on building 100,000 units. However, only 45,168 Mazda6s rolled off the assembly line last year.
Apparently Mazda is thinking of introducing a replacement product, or moving production of the sedan to Mexico to reduce costs and increase profits.
Subaru has reportedly completely given up on research and development for a second generation of the Tribeca, available since 2005.
The SUV’s pathetic sales figures and the increased demand for the Outback and Legacy have seemingly forced the automaker to find ways to improve productivity and profitability, namely by eliminating the Tribeca.
Mazda and Subaru spokespersons declined to comment.
