The fine art of the turn signal

The turn signal is a constant thorn in my side. Like an itch I can't scratch, a constant ringing in my ears, turn signals (read: a lack of turn signal use) drive me absolutely up the wall. This is not the first time I've written on this topic, and I can guarantee it won't be the last.

I'm a firm believer in the fact that rules are put in place for a reason. Speed limits are there to stop us killing ourselves by losing control when we go to fast. Stop lights and signs are there to prevent us smashing into one another and promote the flow of traffic. Headlights and taillights are there to help us see at night and help others on the road know we're there.

Everything serves a specific purpose.

So, what gives so many people the right to ignore their turn signals – all the time?! I am not a psychic. I cannot tell what you want to do if you do not let me know. Turn signals are a car's form of communication. Until cars can speak to one another or for their drivers, we're going to have to use the old smoke-signal method, aka turn signals. I know, how caveman of us all. But it works. Trust me.

Nothing's worse than waiting to turn onto a street when there's an oncoming car. You wait and you wait and you wait (because you're nice and you don't want to cut them off), and then they turn onto the street you're turning off of. If you'd known they'd planned to turn (with a turn signal) you could have gone already.

Patience aside, using a turn signal is just common courtesy.

I can go from a good mood to instant bitch the moment someone fails to use a turn signal properly, and here's why: it's so simple. Truly, it's the easiest thing to use on a car. Simply move your left hand up or down a quarter of an inch and there ya go. It even turns itself off for you. Really, it requires zero effort.

I wish police would give tickets for failure to use a turn signal. Forget cutting through parking lots or having a too-loud exhaust; how about ticketing drivers for unsafe driving? Because, not using your turn signal is right up there with speeding in my books. From drifting across lanes on the highway sans signal to braking suddenly and turning without the slightest bit of warning for those around you on the road; it's hazardous.

Have some respect for your fellow motorists on the road and use your turn signal, please. It's really not that difficult and it could mean the difference between a fender-bender and arriving safely at your destination (not to mention save me from having a raging fit before I get to work).
