Anti-lock brakes are mandatory on vehicles today and so taken totally for granted. So we tend to forget how much they add to vehicle occupants’ safety when emergency braking is required.

Mercedes-Benz is often credited with producing the first models with ABS brakes, but to find the roots of the technology you have to go back further in time, to 1966. That year, a mechanical system was included on the Jensen FF. In North America, Lincoln and Ford would offer it in 1969 on the rear wheels of the Continental Mark III and Thunderbird. The system was called Sure-Track.

Today, the ABS system is just part of the furniture.
