10 — The race to electrification
Our last spot in this Top list of products to watch out for in the pickup truck domain in 2020 is not a product as such, but a technology. With all the splashy announcements made by players large and small last year, we expect the idea and details of electric-powered pickup trucks will be much-discussed again this year.
We’ve mentioned Rivian, of course; the company is already testing its R1T and should be ready with a production version before the year is out. But where are GM and Ford in their development processes? Will we see electric-powered Silverado and F-150 trucks arrive soon?
Electric pickups are a certainty. The first question revolves around when they’ll show, and which ones will arrive first. The second question will then be how consumers respond to this new product type. Pickup owners are a notoriously loyal lot, so it will be interesting to see how open they are to a radically different concept of the light-duty truck.
