Best Sports Car: Volkswagen Golf GTI

There's a lot of competition in the sporty category. It's almost as if each manufacturer feels compelled to make a dramatic last stand before everything goes electric.
Last year, Mazda's MX-5, despite its small size and fewer than 200 hp on hand, was my choice in this category. And it's still as lovable as ever - anyone who loves to drive should try an MX-5 at least once in their lifetime.
But, the year 2022 marks the return of the Volkswagen Golf GTI - along with the Golf R, by the way – and it has so much going for it it's an unbeatable choice in this category. Note that for the first time, these two outstanding pocket rockets are not being offered alongside the regular Golf in North America.
The GTI has evolved with this overhaul, but rest assured it's still as practical, fast, comfortable and fun to drive as ever. Its powertrain has even been reworked, but the essence of the car remains intact. If only the dashboard’s commands we weren't so touchscreen-focused.
Honorable mention goes to the revised Toyota GR86/Subaru BRZ, a tandem that promises to delight enthusiasts who may have been left wanting more than the first generation of the two affordable coupes could give.
