Subcompact car: Nissan Versa
The Versa returns as value champion in this segment, but that comes with an asterisk because with the departure of the likes of the Kia Rio, there really isn’t much competition at this level anymore.
That’s not to discount the Versa’s qualities as a great commuter car for couples and small families, however. It still punches above its weight class in terms of both interior space and truck capacity. Also it looks cool, especially in SR trim, which provides more aggressive wheels, dark grille and contrast-colour wing mirrors.
With a cost of entry of just $20,498 CAD, the Versa continues to provide a level of bang for buck that beats even the ultra-cheap Mitsubishi Mirage.
Mid-size sedan: Hyundai Sonata
Everyone loves a fresh face, right? Well, the Sonata is more than happy to oblige after a 2024 facelift saw it gain ultra-slim full-length front lightbar and drop-down headlights that do well to fit with the brand’s new Sensuous Sportiness design language.
In recent years, Hyundai has also upped the ante in terms of build quality and features both inside and out. The Sonata is a beneficiary of this approach, with features like an optional full digital dash, heated front seats and steering wheel, power front seats and standard synthetic leather seating surfaces.
You can even add AWD for $2,000 and still keep the cost of entry below $40,000.
