8 - Microchip shortage: GM plants shut down

In every corner of the automotive industry, THE hot-button issue for much of 2021 was undoubtedly the ongoing microchip shortage. An issue that arose a direct consequence of the pandemic, the lack of available microchips in sufficient quantities has caused delays in deliveries of vehicles to dealerships and in the development of certain models. The problem has been so acute at times that some factories have had to be shut down for extended periods of time for lack of parts. And then there were the models that some manufacturers wetn ahead and built, but left incomplete, as they awaited missing components.
Last September, GM announced that some of its plants were taking a break, which had repercussions on consumers. Here's what caught your attention at the time.
