2020 Subaru Outback

To mark the 25th anniversary of its Outback, Subaru is introducing a new generation of the model for 2020. This sixth generation is also the most advanced to date.

Its styling slightly modernized (though not so much that we can start calling it pretty), the Outback retains much of its 2017-vintage fundamentals though it sits on an improved platform that’s 70% stiffer in terms of torsion and front suspension and 100% stiffer in regards to the rear bodyshell and for front lateral flexibility.

Two engines are listed in the 2020 Outback catalog. The 2.5L 4-cylinder Boxer engine is almost 90% new, according to Subaru, and now offers direct injection and a stop-start function. This “new” engine, which develops 182 hp and 176 lb-ft of torque, is paired with a Lineartronic Continuously Variable Transmission (CVT) with paddle shifters and a new 8-speed manual mode.

The other engine is borrowed from the larger Ascent SUV. This 2.4L 4-cylinder developing 260 hp and 277 lb-ft of torque comes with the same CVT unit, and it can tow up to 1,590 kg (3,500 pounds). The model will arrive at dealerships in the fall.
