What was long ago considered impossibility has now become reality: Toyota has hoisted itself in the top spot in world wide vehicle sales, knocking General Motors out of the position it has held for a very long time.
Between January and March of this year, Toyota delivered 2.348 million vehicles compared to GM's 2.26 million. These rankings are usually based on annual sales but given GM outsold Toyota last year by 162,000 units, the outcome was almost inevitable. By comparison, in only the first quarter of 2007, Toyota has found 88,000 more takers of their products than GM did.
Most industry expert had long been saying that it was only a matter of time before Toyota steals the crown. GM has been steadily losing market share in the US over the last few years all the while leading sales in the ever-growing Chinese market.
Only time will tell if Toyota can hold onto its newly attained title. One thing is certain; GM will not take this sitting down.
