Because VVT-i improves fuel economy and reduces the emission of greenhouse gases such as nitrogen oxides and hydrocarbons, this engine meets Canadian federal standards for certification as a low-emission vehicle (LEV).
A 4-speed Super ECT (Super automatic) transmission incorporates the smartest Toyota technologies for enhanced responsiveness and smooth shifting. The Engine Control Module manages all shift decisions based on engine speed and load, so that every shift is precise and seamless. The system also learns and adjusts for the slight wear on parts over time so that gearshifts remain crisp over the whole life of the vehicle. Uphill shift logic monitors the throttle angle and holds the transmission in a lower gear while travelling uphill.

RAV4's full-time, 4-wheel drive system is equipped with a viscous coupling-controlled centre differential. Simple, compact, highly-rigid, and specifically designed for the transversely-mounted 1AZ-FE engine, it ensures that torque remains equally distributed between the front and rear wheels at all times for enhanced driving stability and maneuverability.
