Microsoft Corp. and Toyota Motor Corp. today announced a strategic partnership and a $12 million investment to build a global platform for the Japanese automaker's next-generation telematics services using the Windows Azure platform by 2015.
Encompassing GPS navigation, energy management and multimedia features, the system will fuse telecommunications and information technologies in Toyota vehicles. This means using computer resources (software, video games, etc.) remotely through an Internet connection, a concept known as 'cloud computing'.
Of course, this is not the first time Microsoft has teamed up with an automaker. Most notably, the worldwide leader in software helped Ford develop SYNC, one of the most advanced infotainment systems on the market right now.
