Most drivers have become sick and tired of rising gas prices, which is why they are increasingly turning to more fuel-efficient vehicles. Consequently, hybrids such as the Toyota Prius are more popular than ever.

According to Reuters, demand for the Prius is so strong that the Japanese automaker decided to increase production capacity by 70 percent. A total of 480,000 units will be built annually.

Most of this increase will come from the Tsutsimi assembly plant, in Japan, where five models will have to be moved to other facilities in order to make room for the hybrid sedan.

Let's not forget that Toyota also announced the construction of a new plant in Mississippi for the next-generation Prius. Last year, the company sold 281,300 units worldwide, while forecasts for 2010 and beyond exceed one million units.
