Former Formula 1 World Champion Jacques Villeneuve and IndyCar driver Alex Tagliani are in Australia where they will compete in a very special Australian V8 Supercar race.
The two Canadians will accompany 16 other international “star” drivers – including Australians that have always raced professionally abroad – in the popular Australian tin top series.
The international drivers are assigned to one team each. For each 300-km race, the teams will have to give the wheel of their cars to one of the international drivers for at least one third of each session next weekend, on this 2.96 km street circuit.
The weekend includes four practice sessions on Friday followed by a 30 minutes qualifying session and a 300km race Saturday and the same schedule on Sunday. There will be a special 30 minutes top-10 qualifying session on Saturday only.
Helio Castroneves (Brazil), Sebastien Bourdais (France), David Brabham (Australia), Ryan Briscoe (Australia), Scott Dixon (Australia), Dario Franchitti (Scotland), Fabrizio Giovanardi (Italy), Patrick Long (USA), Alain Menu (Switzerland), Tiago Monteiro (Portugal), Gianni Morbidelli (Italy), Yvan Muller (France), Will Power (Australia), Andy Priaulx (England), Scott Pruett (USA) and Mika Salo (Finland) will also be racing on the Gold Coast this week-end.
Villeneuve will be racing the No. 55 Bottle-O Racing Team Ford Falcon alongside driver-owner Paul Dumbrell while Tagliani will race a Holden Commdore for the Kelly Racing team.
Funny fact: Tagliani has met his wife, Australian-born Bronté, during the Gold Coast, several years ago when he was racing in the ChampCar series.
