Another model year is coming to a close, and 2009 Volkswagens are starting to trickle into showrooms. First and foremost, let's start with the new models and see what's changed on the rest of the line-up.
The Passat CC is a low-slung sedan that follows a growing trend a 'four-door coupes'. Sportier and more luxurious than the current Passat, the CC will be offered in three trim levels; the Sportline and Highline are available with a 200-hp, 2.0 TSI engine and can be mated to either a 6-speed manual or a 6-speed Tiptronic automatic. The Highline V6 gets all-wheel drive as well as the company's 280-hp 3.6L V6 mated to the Tiptronic.
Notable features include a panoramic sunroof, a navigation system with a 30-Gb hard drive, a 600-watt sound system and adaptive bi-xenon headlights. Pricing has not yet been announced. Look for our driving impressions of the Passat CC next week.
The Routan is a new 7-passenger minivan that was jointly developed with Chrysler. A choice of four trim levels is offered, all powered by a 251-hp, 4.0-litre V6 bolted to a 6-speed automatic with manual mode.
The $27,595 Trendline comes with stability control, 3-zone climate control, power windows and heated mirrors and keyless entry. A loaded Execline, complete with 17-inch alloy wheels, 500-watt sound system, rear-seat DVD entertainment system and navigation lists for $49,975. Look for our driving impressions of the Routan this coming November.
Launched earlier this year, the Tiguan is a new compact SUV powered by a 200-hp 2.0 TSI engine. Pricing ranges from $27,595 for the base front-drive Trendline model with 6-speed manual to the $38,375 Highline, which includes such features as all-wheel drive, 6-speed Tiptronic, 18-inch alloy wheels, adaptive bi-xenon headlights, dual-zone climate control and leather seating. A navigation system adds $3,450.
The City Golf is a carryover for 2009 except for one exterior color change, while the City Jetta gets standard 16-inch wheels in replacement of last year's 15-inchers.
The Rabbit, offered in 3-door and 5-door versions, loses a paint color but gets a $1,600 Sport package that includes 17-inch alloy wheels, bi-xenon headlights, fog lights, leather-wrapped steering wheel and shift knob, and a sport suspension. The GTI hot hatch is unchanged.
