Many automakers intend to use the 2011 Tokyo Motor Show in December to display their latest green products. For one, BMW will host the world premiere of their ActiveHybrid 5 sedan as a production model.
The hybrid system at the core of this BMW 5 Series consists of an inline 6-cylinder gasoline engine, an electric motor, and a high-capacity, lithium-ion battery. An 8-speed automatic transmission handles shifting duties.
As you can imagine, the battery/engine setup allows the BMW ActiveHybrid 5 to achieve significant fuel savings without significantly compromising performance. Engineers capitalized on the immediate torque delivered by the electric motor to offer drivers a boost function that yields spirited accelerations.
The new BMW ActiveHybrid 5 (the German automaker's third hybrid model) will share the BMW stand at the Tokyo Motor Show with a new family of 4-cylinder TwinPower Turbo engines, as well as advanced diesel engines featuring BluePerformance technology.
