The A-Spec's sequentially shifting automatic is the same as that in the regular Type S. And what a shifter it is! Unlike most competitive manually actuated automatics, Acura's holds its shift at redline without cutting out.

By applying the Type S' throttle progressively you can avoid its inherent torque steer and be rewarded with wonderful grip and agile poise through the slalom - the A-Spec should perform similarly. Its speed-sensitive, variable power-assist rack-and-pinion steering system snaps to attention immediately with no dead spot at center. Panic lane changes hardly provoke body roll either, maintaining the sedan's and driver's composure. Actually, few vehicles in its midsize class offer as good a ride and handling compromise. Acura achieves this with an independent double-wishbone front suspension, including coil springs and a stabilizer bar plus an independent rear set up with multi-link double-wishbones, coil springs and another stabilizer bar. Its traction control system (TCS) is unchanged from the base TL, but the Type S and A-Spec get Acura's Vehicle Stability Assist (VSA) for additional all-weather control.

This close-up shot of the A-Spec's rear spoiler shows off its unusual outside corner lights. A discrete A-Spec badge take its place under the Type S emblem.

The Type S brakes quickly due to a 4-channel ABS system with 4-wheel speed sensors and an electronic/hydraulic control unit - the base TL gets only a 3-channel ABS system. Additional safety features include automatic front seat belt pre-tensioners, dual-stage front airbags, front driver and passenger side-impact airbags with occupant sensors, as well as a passenger-side mirror that tilts down when in reverse.
