I don’t know how to describe the 2010 Dodge Journey. Really, I have no idea. Nada, zilch. I’m not saying the vehicle isn’t worth your hard-earned money; it’s just the genre that gives me trouble.

Of course, the Journey merely reflects the hot new trend in the auto industry, where car platforms multiply like rabbits and adopt multiple purposes. This particular one embodies the brand’s testosterone-infused attitude and styling yet incorporates a versatile, family-friendly layout, making it some sort of crossover van or wagon. Plus, the Journey shares its architecture with a small midsize sedan, the Chrysler Sebring, and therefore delivers car-like driving dynamics.

So, to sum up, here we have a crossover-type family hauler that handles like a sedan and offers great versatility. Are you starting to get the picture?

Macho looks
Clearly, the 2010 Dodge Journey R/T appears larger than it actually is due to the big, brawny front grille and boxy silhouette. It’s probably as muscular and macho as a true Dodge can get. Whether you like the crossover thing or not, you can’t deny that this vehicle looks distinctive and assertive even though it may not stand out at first in a crowded parking lot.

An equal dose of masculinity can be found inside. Too bad the lack of refinement a.k.a sub-par fit and finish turns our attention away from the surprisingly well-equipped cabin. The center stack is huge and seemingly occupies half the space on the dashboard. Plus, it’s littered with all sorts of buttons and controls. Add low-grade materials such as hard, creaky plastics and some unfinished business with regard to build quality (in my tester, the top storage compartment in place of the optional navigation system wouldn’t close properly) and you’ll get a fairly accurate appreciation of the interior.

What a shame, though, because the Journey boasts a number of cool and smart features like Chrysler’s Stain Repel seat fabric, a more than decent third-row bench and ample room for the entire family. Let’s not forget the many ingenious storage solutions, the famous Chill Zone and the available overhead cargo light which doubles as a removable and rechargeable flashlight — perfect for family adventures!
