The Mazda2 hit dealerships in the summer of 2010 with the goal of injecting Mazda’s ‘zoom-zoom’ driving dynamics and a helping of youthful styling into the Canadian subcompact marketplace.
The premise for the 2 was a simple one: build a car aimed to impress those shoppers who find the scene’s other ‘budget-cars’ boring to look at and unexciting drive. To cut some of the competition’s grass in one of Canada’s hottest market segments, Mazda’s worked long and hard to ensure the 2 gives the Toyota Yaris, Honda Fit and Hyundai Accent a real headache.
Night Sky
The Japanese brand celebrated the arrival of their latest work on our shores with a special, celebratory run of 500 exclusive ‘Yozora Edition’ 2 models.
Yozora is Japanese for ‘Night Sky’—hence its availability exclusively with a vivid black paint job. Other exclusive cosmetics include upgraded wheels with performance tires, a giant rear spoiler, a Mazdaspeed exhaust tip, and a ‘body wrap’ across the front corner of the car that pastes on number ‘2’ decals of differing sizes and colours.
Mazda says the Yozora Edition of their 2 blends the personalization and feature content many of the vehicle’s fans are after. It’s all very slick looking-- especially as applied to the 2’s compact little body.
Not so little...
And, despite that compact little body, the 2 doesn’t feel particularly little at all. Inside, there’s plenty of room for four adults, provided the larger ones sit up front. Drivers of average to slightly-above-average size shouldn’t feel cramped, and the low window line translates into great outward visibility while furthering the feeling of spaciousness.
The 2 is also very manoeuvrable, easy to park, and easy to get in and out of. Air conditioning, steering-wheel mounted controls and generous at-hand storage facilities were all on board, as was an auxiliary audio jack and power outlet for mobile audio enthusiasts. In back, there’s a surprisingly deep trunk and a set of split-folding seats, too. The cabin’s overall look is modern, upscale and distinctive.
