- Close and lock your car when you park even if you feel you are in a safe area.
- Always take your keys with you when you park, even for a short time.
- Never leave your car running unattended. That’s like valet service for thieves, inviting them to drive off with your car.
- After you park your car, make sure you close all the windows. A slender arm or clothes hanger can reach in through even a narrow opening to unlock the door.
- Don’t store valuables or expensive electronics, such as a dash-top GPS navigator, in plain sight. It’s best to take portable devices with you, or at least hide them within the vehicle.
- Park in a well-lighted area or a garage if possible. If it’s at your house, remember to lock the garage door.
- Park with your wheels turned toward the curb and emergency brake on, which makes it more difficult to tow away.
- Do not leave the registration or title in your vehicle.
- Put your address or other identification inside the doors to help police identify your vehicle or parts.
- Install an anti-theft device or system on your vehicle as an extra deterrent measure or for advanced protection. A GPS or radio frequency tracking system in your vehicle may help police recover it, if stolen
