But sedan or 5-door, as marketers like to call station wagons now, the Taurus is still a gamble when it comes to reliability. I've known people who will swear by them, but known more that regularly swear at them. I remember my late step-father telling me that he had thirty fleet cars for the sales people and executives in his company, 27 of them Buick Centuries and 3 Ford Tauruses. The few Ford's were in the shop more collectively than all the Buicks, enough said.

While the 1992 and newer Taurus was an improvement in reliability over previous generations, there are much better cars on the market if trouble free driving is a priority. Still, they're cheap and offer lots of features compared to Japanese cars of the era. If your heart is set on one, make sure you get it inspected thoroughly by a trusted mechanic. Find one that's been babied and make sure its brakes have been done, a costly and constant problem for this model. And last of all, good luck you'll need it.
