In its last year of this body style, 1995, Ford added only a standard rear defogger for its U.S. customers - Ford of Canada, like every other manufacturer selling in Canada's colder clime, had made the essential feature standard since the model's inception. While the LX saw no changes for 1995 a Special Edition model, dubbed SE, offering a value bundle of popular options became available. The package included special trim and an AM/FM/cassette audio system.

Compared to the original 1986 model the 1992 Taurus was much better, but the changes appeared evolutionary rather than the earlier car's revolutionary assault on the marketplace. The performance-oriented 220-hp 3.0-L Yamaha V6 powered SHO (Super High Output) that dawned in 1989 developed an almost cult-like following initially, but its cumbersome 5-speed manual kept sales slow before an automatic transmission version would arrive two years later. Sales remained tepid even when the revamped SHO hit the scene just after the redesigned 1992 car was made available, but continued even until the next-generation Taurus finished its tenure in 1999.

The Taurus wagon was also popular, and arguably the best aging from a design perspective. Currently it fetches more money on the used market, mostly because wagons are more in demand now than they were in the 90s. The standard GL and LX features are much the same as the sedan, but an L model was continued forward from 1990 and '91, bridging the wagon's base to fully loaded features gap. Ford obviously felt it unnecessary as the special designation was dropped in 1993. With all seats in their upright positions the wagon could hold 1,294 L (45.7 cu ft) of cargo, but fold the rear seatback flat and its capacity stretched to a total of 2,294 L (81.0 cu ft).
