Careful Camaro shopping can lead to a fun and rewarding car
You'll want to do a bit of digging to make sure the Camaro you're looking at isn't near-ready to turn its mechanical bits inside out. An ideal way to ensure you're buying a well-cared-for Camaro is to look for one that's got full service records and is familiar to your local dealership or garage.

If you're opting for a V6 powered model, the 3.8 litre engine is typically a more reliable choice-- though it may suffer from intake manifold gasket issues that most technicians are familiar with. The LT1 and LS1 V8 engines tend to be very solid performers, but they may still have parts that need attention. Note any leaks of coolant or oil from the engine, transmission and differential. Don't be shy to get under the car with a flashlight, or have it inspected on a hoist. Check the condition of oil and transmission fluid as applicable, and enlist the services of a shop if you're unsure.

Check engine lights indicate a problem, and may be caused by a problematic 'OptiSpark' distributor on older Camaros with the V8 engine. The distributor wears out prematurely due to harsh underhood conditions, and it can be expensive and labor- intensive to change.

When driving your used Camaro candidate with a manual transmission, note any slippage from the clutch which could indicate the need for a replacement. Pay attention to the condition of the brakes and tires for the same reason. Changing brakes, tires or a clutch can be a pricey job on a car like this, and some sellers would love to pass the expense on to you.

Additionally, if looking at a convertible model, ensure proper operation of the roof mechanism in both directions and look for any rips, tears or leaks. Check for proper operation of all interior accessories, especially power windows, cruise control and the air conditioner.

Many Camaros in the used market will have been modified to some degree by previous owners. Though intake and exhaust bolt-ons will tend to be the most common, it's important to get a grasp on what changes were made, and the quality of the installation work. Unless you're up to speed on more serious drivetrain mods like forced induction or nitrous, these should be avoided.

Many sports car communities have thousands of happy owners that have taken to the internet to share stories, tips and advice. Find a clean used Camaro that gets mechanical approval from your favorite technician, and you'll likely become one of them.
