A base STD model received a 2.4-L 4-cylinder engine, delivering 150-hp and 155 lb-ft of torque, not bad for 1997. The base transmission was automatic with four forward gears. If its mediocre acceleration wasn't up to your sporting pretensions, or your son's, Chevy offered its 3.1-L V6, with 155-hp and 185 lb-ft of torque in its LS model. Strangely the 1998 model's V6 suffered a drop in both horsepower and torque of 5 each, for 150-hp and 180 lb-ft.
Optional features included an AM/FM/CD/cassette audio system, power windows, power door locks, keyless entry, a power driver's seat, power mirrors, cruise control and alloy wheels.

| 1998 Malibu in a setting that befits the model's name. |
Model year 1998 added a few nice options to the mix, including leather seats, a leather-wrapped steering wheel and a power sunroof. New alloy wheels updated the look. 1999 introduced an optional split-folding rear seat, improving access to the cargo area and overall volume, but other than that it was identical to the previous model year.
