| 1998 Malibu suspension system. |
While the Malibu offered standard ABS, its crash test ratings were only so-so. Frontal impact are good for both front passenger and driver, probably due to its standard dual front airbags, but a side impact frontal collision was rated very poor, side impact rear only average, crash offset merely acceptable and bumper bash, marginal. Second generation airbags debuted in 1998.

| The 1997 Malibu was relatively trouble free, as the 1998 and 1999 model that followed it, with only two minor recalls over three years. |
Only one minor recall affected both the 1997 and 1998 models. If a buildup of snow or ice were to restrict the passenger-side wiper arm movement, its pivot housing could crack and the wiper would cease to operate. The 1999 recall, only affected V6 engine models. If equipped with ignition coil/control module assemblies that were incorrectly manufactured, engine misfire could occur. Again, the recall was relatively minor without dire consequences. Both should have been dealt with under warranty. The Malibu's minimal recalls speaks well of its general reliability.
