My 1967 Mexico has the most wonderful 5-speed transmission. True, it's not as effortless as a new BMW shifter but its positive response with absolutely zero play, a joy to wrap your hand around. The clutch is a wee bit on the heavy side, again compared with modern cars, yet it is easy for an average sized person to depress. As well, the pedals are well situated for precise heal-toe maneuvers. As is pure Maserati tradition, the new Getrag 6-speed manual is no slouch either. It is also possible to have a BTR automatic transmission with 4 electronically-controlled speeds, which can be selected according to the driver's appetite. Depending on the road and use conditions, three different modes can be selected. Normal, for a more relaxed autobahn attitude, with the kick-down activated only when the pedal is fully depressed. Power, for a decidedly more sport oriented mood, allowing for higher rpm and faster gear shifting, with the possibility of using the engine to brake. The kick-down is advanced when compared to the 'Normal' function. The third position, Ice, automatically selects the third gear, reducing the wheel torque in low grip conditions, also using the engine brake. As well, a self-diagnosis device checks temperature, oil pressure and emergency program, automatically selecting the 'Ice' mode in bad conditions.
The well balanced chassis is monocoque-body type, with a high torsional and flexible stiffness degree. Complementing this tight body is a fully independent suspension with electronic adjustment. The front includes McPherson struts with pressurized hydraulic telescopic shock absorbers, helical springs and an anti-roll bar. The rear has overlapped triangle arms, with pressurized hydraulic telescopic shock absorbers. The camber can be adjusted thanks to the tubular supporting structure.
