The 2001 concept is extremely low and wide with a length of 4,150 mm (163.4 in), width of 1,870 mm (73.6 in) and height of just 1,100 mm (43.3 in). Where the Nissan 350Z sports a V6 and RX-8 a small displacement rotary, Toyota chose a sophisticated 32-valve, DOHC, 4.3-L V8, the same as found in the production SC 430 sport convertible, for the rear-drive roadster concept. In 2001 trim it was good for 290-hp at 5,600 rpm and 320 lb-ft of torque at 3,400 rpm, ample considering the concept's much lower curb weight - the current SC offers 300-hp and 325 lb-ft of torque.

A 50/50 weight distribution ratio combined with a low center of gravity and excellent aerodynamic characteristics would make for impressive high-speed performance too. Its suspension is comprised of a unique in-wheel double wishbone setup, reducing weight while reportedly offering precise handling. Distinct 3-spoke 18-inch alloy rims are wrapped in 245/40R18 tires up front and 285/35R18s in the rear. The individual spoke's ribbed design makes them look as if they're in motion when standing still, while a Mazda rotary-style triangular appliqué graces the center hub position. The wheels frame large discs at all corners, painted red to highlight the car's sporting image.
