I especially like the optional navigational system that boasts a touch-sensitive screen allowing north, south, east and western surrounding maps to be called up when tapping the appropriate side of the display. The system also brings up points of interest and the location of refueling stations - most handy when traveling. I suppose the only negative aspect of this convenience is the occasional need to wipe fingerprints from the screen - a small price to pay.

While the natural toned Bader leather clad front seats are among the most comfortable I've ever tested, the near verticle rear seats are more for styling purposes. (Photo: Shawn Pisio, Canadian Auto Press)

On the comfort side the SC 430's natural toned, Bader leather clad seats, featuring memory equipped 8-way power adjustment including lumbar support, are among the more comfortable I've ever tested, at least up front. Those in the rear are more for styling purposes, possibly useful for picking up the kids, or grandkids from school, and then only if the front seats aren't extended fully to their rearmost positions. What makes them most uncomfortable are near vertical backrests, forcing the body into an unnatural, fully upright position. Lexus might instead consider offering the option of a parcel shelf for those who think three's a crowd, as storage in the trunk is extremely limited.

Along with its distinct front-end treatment, encompassing a pronounced grille and richly detailed headlamp clusters, the SC's design is a love it or hate it affair. (Photo: Shawn Pisio, Canadian Auto Press)

The model's styling is a personal matter. When I witnessed its launch at the New York International Auto Show in April of 2000, I have to admit to being initially dismayed. Now, for reasons I'm not sure, I truly like its distinct front-end treatment, encompassing a pronounced grille and richly detailed headlamp clusters. Its rear styling is equally organic, blending all things round into a cohesive package.

Still, not everyone seems to agree with me. From interviewing friends, colleagues and passers by, the SC is a love it or hate it design, with some, like my wife Jennifer, rating it as one of the most beautiful new cars available, and others, chastising it as absolutely hideous. I suppose everyone is entitled to an opinion. Fortunately, those with a strong enough sense of individuality to opt for the SC will no doubt care less for what others think.
