Of course the Targa's standard P205/50ZR17 performance tires that wrap around delicately thin 5-spoke wheels are quite able, but not so much as my test car's lower profile rubber on 18-inch rims. The thick tires are equally adept at hauling driver and passenger down from silly speeds to standstill in short order, thanks to large diameter vented discs and 4-piston calipers. Through the twisting mountain roads near my home I charged down each mini straight and pounced on the brakes before each curve. Never did I experience a single bit of fade, even after over 50 km up and down the winding, undulating coastline.
But enough about fun, what about practicality? OK, so it's not a minivan but the Targa boasts a glass hatch and rear cargo area that's really handy. I used it for dropping grocery bags in, carrying magazines (something you tend to do in the publishing business), my daughters backpack, and more. The deep front trunk has a decent amount of storage space too. And those pesky little rear seats? They're perfect for kids under 12 or, in the event the kids are at Grandma's, ideal for a weekend's luggage when folded flat. Try that in a 2-seat Ferrari.
