Good braking is important as the BMW sourced 282-hp 4.4-L V8 provides ample acceleration, especially noticeable from takeoff. It's surprising how quick it actually feels considering the SUV's substantial 2,440 kg (5,379 lb) curb weight. Of course its actual 9.2 second 0 to 100 km/h run, while good for this class, is far from sports car like, making me wonder what I was thinking when it felt so fast. But who cares. The engine is wonderfully smooth, produces delectable noises and is quite a bit quicker than the old 4.6-L pushrod lump in the previous model. Making it even sweeter is the multimode ZF 5-speed sequentially shifting automatic gearbox that connects to it, easily one of the best in the manually operated automatic transmission field.

Completing the drivetrain is a very capable permanent 4-wheel drive system. A low-geared 2-speed electronic transfer gearbox with Torsen torque-sensing center differential is actuated by the previously mentioned console mounted lever, connecting through to more than ample traction for almost any circumstance. It's now complimented by electronic traction control, one of the best inventions probably never intended for but directly benefiting off-road use.
