| This photo of Subaru's original XT6 coupe shows its angular, wedge shaped design. It wasn't very pretty, at least to most, but proved to be quick and wonderfully reliable. |
Unlike the 6-speed manually shifted M5, Subaru's concept is only designed to integrate a 5-speed automatic transmission, but it no doubt includes a sequential shift mode similar to the automatic equipped WRX. Currently Subaru doesn't offer a manual transmission with its H-6 engine, nor would any manual the company currently offers be capable of handling the powerplant's substantial torque.
The Variable Torque Distribution (VTD) equipped auto gearbox is plenty robust however, while as sophisticated as they come. VTD controls power distribution between the wheels via a planetary gear-type centre differential and electronically controlled hydraulic transfer clutches. The technology splits torque between the front and rear wheels on demand, responding to road surface conditions.

Whether you like it or not the B11S represents a bold move forward for the FHI brand. The new vision has a lot to do with recently appointed President and Chief Operating Officer Kyoji Takenaka, who wants to take the company in a new styling oriented direction. Integral to this plan is new Vice President, Senior General Manager of the Subaru Product and Portfolio Planning Division and General Manager of the Subaru Design Department Kiyoshi Sugimoto - the first car designer ever to be appointed as an executive officer. The B11S design wasn't all his however. The Japanese automaker was assisted by Fuore Design International, an independent Barcelona-based design studio.
Styling may be the new company focus but the B11S concept's unorthodox grille might be a bit over the top even for Subaru SVX fans. The rest of the car, mind you, is stunning. If Subaru can clean up the front end this concept could be a big production winner and vault the alternative brand's image even higher up the enthusiast's wish list.
