Still the new truck reportedly rides and handles much better than the 2002 model, partly due to its wider stance and 1,143 mm (4.5 in) longer wheelbase as well as a 19 mm (0.7 in) drop in ground clearance and resultant lower ride height. How will this important 4x4 attribute affect traditional 4Runner buyers? That remains to be seen. The fact remains that the 4Runner is still more capable at cresting rocks and debris off the beaten path than most of its competitors. For example the GM midsize SUVs ground clearance are 203 mm (8.0 in) while Ford's Explorer and Dodge's Durango are both 216 mm (8.5 in). The only competitor to best the 4Runner is Jeep's Grand Cherokee at 231 mm (9.1 in), but I wouldn't consider 1.0 mm much of an advantage. The Toyota also features engine, fuel tank and transfer case protector plates if you do happen to hang it up. For those more interested in on-road prowess a REAS sport suspension package is optional on the SR5 V6 and V8 and standard on the Limited V6 and V8.

So what do you get with the Limited that you don't get on the SR5? First of all the base (SR5) V6 and V8 models come well equipped with 6-speaker AM/FM/CD/cassette audio system, A/C equipped climate control system with air filtration, driver's seat height adjustment with power lumbar support, 60/40 split-folding rear bench seat, power windows, power door locks with keyless entry and trunk release, power rear hatch window, power remote heated mirrors, power glass sunroof, tilt steering, rear cargo cover, cruise control, engine immobilizer and 16-inch alloy wheels.

The Limited adds a premium 10-speaker JBL AM/FM/cassette audio system with a 6-disc in-dash CD changer plus steering wheel and rear audio controls, dual zone climate control, leather seats with heated cushions and 8-way driver's power adjustment, heated power front passenger seat, leather-wrapped steering wheel, simulated leather door trim, telescopic steering wheel, integrated garage door opener, 115-volt accessory power outlet, front seat mounted side airbags and front and rear side-curtain airbags, an anti-theft system, color-keyed exterior accents, 17-inch alloy wheels, fog lamps and more.
