The performance star of the lineup is the Matrix XRS FWD. Under the hoodis a 1.8-litre, 4-cylinder 2ZZ-GE powerplant with Toyota's advanced VariableValve Timing and Lift with intelligence (VVTL-i). This engine, used by theCelica GT-S, develops 180 hp at 7,600 rpm and 130 lb/ft of torque at 6,800rpm. VVTL-i uses 2-stage lift and duration profiles for intake and exhaustcams. Increasing the intake and exhaust lift when engine speed is high opensup a new area of performance at high rpms and increases both power output andefficiency.
