Last-generation RL seems affected only by minor problems
Once you’ve determined that all systems are in proper working order, kill the stereo and ventilation fan and hit the road. Listen for any abnormal sounds during gear shifting, noting the quality of the shifts both up and down. The RL should shift smoothly and without hesitation. Any jerkiness, clunking or harshness could be a sign of trouble.

Ditto any abnormal noise from beneath the car. Metallic grinding, popping or clunking over bumps typically indicates the need for some sort of suspension repair. If the car pulls to either side while you’re trying to go straight down the highway, an alignment and possible tire replacement are in order, too.

Key in shopping for a good used RL? Patience. Shoppers won’t find a huge selection of used RL’s in the marketplace, and comparing several models in the shopping process is advised. Concerns and trouble areas seem limited mainly to minor interior problems, and in all, the RL looks like a fairly solid bet with a solid drivetrain.

Note that a dealer certified model with some form of remaining warranty is ideal where long-term confidence is concerned.
