Putting a Lid on the Miata

What's the most popular roadster in the world? It isn't Porsche's Boxster, BMW's Z4 or Chrysler's Sebring, not by a long shot. In fact, this title doesn't go to a European or American manufacturer. Despite its diminutive size, relative low power, and less prestigious brand association the reigning champ is Mazda's MX-5 Miata.

Since the car's 1989 introduction a variety of special and limited edition versions of the Miata have surfaced, ranging from less modified paint and interior trim packages to a supercharged version that celebrated Mazda's impressive win at LeMans in 1991 (not available in North America). Finally, after much speculation, for the first time in its fourteen year history Mazda is readying a coupe version of the famed sportster.

While the premise of adding a hardtop to the popular sports car might initially seem like a no-brainer, altercations to the Miata are more thoroughly integrated than just adding a roof. Under the watch of Shigenori Fukada, of the Mazda E&T design group, the cute and cuddly Miata has been altered for a more aggressive, performance-oriented appearance. With a rakish C-pillar that's been labeled similar to everything from a Ferrari to Jaguar E-Type, the Miata Coupe certainly looks more 'butch' in its closed top form.

Breaking with the norm, tin-topped Miata actually is 4.5 kg (10.0 lbs) heavier than the roadster - usually the reverse is true. This says a lot about the Miata roadster's inherent stiffness. While the coupe's metal roof and C-pillars plus larger rear window glass necessary to create the hardtop structure is heavier than the convertible's fabric soft top, most drop tops include a lot of frame and rear bulkhead reinforcements to improve overall rigidity.
